Post-Doctoral fellowship in Computational Microbiology

Title: Post-Doctoral Associate

PI: Dr. Maria T. Abreu

This Post-Doctoral Associate position will provide support in developing projects under the supervision of Dr. Maria T. Abreu, Professor of Medicine, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and Director Crohn’s & Colitis Center. The research focus of Dr. Abreu’s laboratory is inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colon cancer. Dr. Abreu has a special interest in the intimate relationship between the intestinal mucosa of the human host and its associated intestinal microbiota. In particular, her laboratory is interested in testing the hypothesis that innate immune receptors that recognize bacteria activate intestinal epithelial cells to proliferate promoting colitis-associated cancer. In addition, through their work in toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), an innate immune receptor that recognizes bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), they are studying how TLRs can regulate colon stem cells in health and in cancer. Dr. Abreu has also embarked on studies looking at TLR signaling in obesity-dependent intestinal inflammation and cancer. The lab’s recent development of a gnotobiotic (germ-free) animal facility will permit the elucidation of microbial signals leading to inflammation and cancer. Dr. Abreu’s translational research looks at gene-environment interaction resulting in IBD especially in immigrant populations.

Accountabilities:

  • Perform computational analyses on microbiome data, including taxonomical and functional classifications
  • Analysis of bacterial communities using various ‘omics approaches and large data sets
  • Plan and design experiments to elicit host-microbiome interactions in the gut
  • Present findings at lab meetings, seminars, and national/international conferences

Minimum Qualifications (essential requirements):

  • Ph.D. or M.D.
  • Experience with microbial genetics
  • Strong skills in experimental design analyzing bacterial communities of any kind (gut, skin, soil, water, etc.)
  • Programming skills (Proficiency in at least one scripting language e.g. R/Python, parallel computing experience)
  • English verbal/written skills are necessary
